Grade 3 - Thurs.
Week of Jan. 13-17
We continued our discussion of the Water Cycle, reviewing previous concepts/terms, and then looking into transpiration, runoff, and groundwater movement. Week of Jan. 6-10 We continued our discussion of the Water Cycle, specifically looking into evaporation, condensation, precipitation, sublimation, and water's melting and boiling points. Week of Jan. 2-3 We started a multi-week investigation of the Water Cycle and ultimately, Watersheds. Merry Christmas! _________________ Week of Dec. 16-20 Christmas class activities! Week of Dec. 9-13 We continued our discussion of National Wildlife Refuges, including a map of locations, a look at the Duck Stamp program, refuge benefits, etc. Week of Dec. 2-6 We discussed the origin and purpose of National Wildlife Refuges, found in all 50 states and in US territories. |

Week of Dec. 9-13 We continued our discussion of National Wildlife Refuges, looking at some of the many locations in the US, refuge benefits, etc. Week of Dec. 2-6 We visited websites with information about National Wildlife Refuges, National Parks, and briefly introduced the Every Kid Outdoors program, and it's free national entry pass for 4th graders/families. |

Week of Jan. 13-16
No class; Testing. Week of Jan. 6-10 No class; Snow Day Tues.! Week of Jan. 2-3 No class; Christmas break. Merry Christmas! _________________ Week of Dec. 16-20 We briefly reviewed some features of National Wildlife Refuges, and then did activities/puzzles in a book on birds. Week of Dec. 9-13 We briefly looked a the difference between people-oriented county parks (e.g., Kinder Farm), state parks (e.g., Sandy Point), and national parks (e.g., Yosemite). We then visited websites with information about the purpose and locations of National Wildlife Refuges. Week of Dec. 2-6 We discussed information about winter birds & bird feeders, visited some interesting live camera sites of bird feeders, etc. |

Week of Nov. 18 - 22 We went over more questions submitted by students about topics covered in Env. Ed. Week of Nov. 11 - 15 Mt. Vernon field trip day. No Env. Education class. Week of Nov. 4 - 8 I collected index cards that had questions from students about topics covered in Env. Ed. during the school year... and a few other natural history topics as well. I provided answers to several of the cards during class, and hope to do a few more in future weeks. Week of Oct. 28 - Nov. 1 No class; Halloween parties Week of Oct. 21 - 25 We took a hike on campus to review discuss layers in a forest. Week of Oct. 14 - 18 We took a hike on campus to introduce Field/Forest Succession, and to use a app (Seek) to identify plants. |

Week of Oct. 28 - Nov. 1 We watched and discussed a short video about animals that use different layers in a fores, from the Canopy to the underground world. Week of Oct. 7 - 11
We installed and used bird ID apps, and learned to use one, BirdNet. Week of Sept. 30 - Oct. 4 No Environmental Education class this week. - Junior Olympics! Week of Sept. 23-27 We started learning how to use the Merlin Bird ID app. I demonstrated how it works, and we plan to use it on our school property periodically (or you at home) to identify bird species by their calls. Week of Sept. 16-20 We reviewed items from our woodland 'discovery hike' from two weeks ago, and then started a discussion of the 4-5 very basic needs of domestic pets and wild animals in their environment. Week of Sept. 9-13 No Environmental Education class this week. Week of Sept. 2-6 We had a guest speaker (my daughter, a field biologist) join us on a 'discovery hike' on our campus woodland trail. Week of August 26-30 I reviewed my previous jobs in natural history, science, and environmental education and how they now are some some of my favorite hobbies, etc. We also went over a variety of technology topics related to iPads. |

Week of Sept. 30 - Oct. 4 We reviewed the results of our Oh Deer population game from last week, discussing the concepts of habitat Carrying Capacity & Limiting Factors. Week of Sept. 23-27 We did an outdoor activity (Oh Deer) investigating animal population dynamics related to natural limiting factors. Week of Sept. 16-20 We did an activity exploring the 4-5 very basic needs of domestic pets and wild animals found in their native habitat. Week of Sept. 9-13 No Environmental Education class this week. Week of Sept. 2-6 We mostly did a Kahoot quiz review of topics from last year's Grade 3 Env. Education classes. Week of Aug. 26-30 We reviewed a variety of technology topics related to iPad use, apps, etc. |
