Welcome to Mrs. Dillow's 4th Grade!
Hello 4th grade,
We are on our second week of Advent and only two weeks left until our Christmas break! We were busy last week, and we will continue to be busy these next two weeks with Christmas pageants, parties, and other holiday cheer! Last week we put up our classroom Christmas tree in which they enjoy and ask for the lights to be on when Ms. Dillow forgets😍 We also continued to learn and study (our vocab, spelling words, reading skills, multiplication facts, science and social studies notes) during these holiday events. Two important reminders are: putting our name on our paper and turning work in on time. In trimester 2, fourth grade will begin taking off points for no name and late assignments. If a child is absent, it is also their responsibility to find out what they missed, so they can make it up and get caught up. In religion we will be finishing Chapter 16 and continue to learn about Advent and Christmas. In chapter 16, we are learning how important it is to say I am sorry and what a better time to do so during the Advent season. Last Friday was St. Nicholas Day and we learned more about him too. Don't be surprised if next year they put out their shoes on Dec 5. In social studies we finished discussing about the first people that came to Maryland and added our first pieces to the puzzle. We have started the reasons of how the colonial times began and why the Europeans found North America. We are beginning to find out how and who found Maryland. Remember to study your notes in social studies which can always be found on my Weebly. We started chapter 5 with Multiplying by 2 digits. This is a tough chapter for many, so we have been reviewing to make sure we understand the steps completely. This is a topic when Multiplication is extremely important in the fourth grade, so please remember to practice your facts. Word problems and using the important information to decide on the operation and if it is a two-part question is another important skill to learn in the fourth grade. They are doing great with underlining the important information, but we are still working on what to do with all the information and understanding what is asking. In ELA, we began Unit 3 week 1 with a new story, vocabulary, comprehension skills along with new spelling words and a grammar skill on verbs. On Tuesday, we will have the spelling and grammar test for this unit. Please make sure they are studying action verbs and the tenses: past, present, and future. Please remember to continue to study the vocabular and the reading skills context clues, flashback, point of view, character traits and mood. Most importantly being able to find text evidence to support these skills. Examples of all this can be found in their Wonders workbook pages 13-16. On Wednesday, they will receive new words and a new grammar lesson for week two. They will have the reading, vocabulary, spelling and grammar test on Wednesday December 18, so they have had plenty of time to study these topics. Please continue to send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day. We do have a working snack each morning. Please make sure they are bringing their instruments in on Monday for band practice. Please remind your children that when they miss a class for band, it is their responsibility to find out what they missed. Thank you! Also, please make sure they are wearing a coat to school. We do go outside on these cold days, so I want them to remain warm with their coat on at recess. Thank you! Please, refer to the handbook for the correct winter uniform regulations, including jewelry, tardiness rules and leaving early, and other new rules that you will need to know to make this great year. Also, I want to thank all the parents who have helped us during lunch and recess. Please remember to continue to watch all children at play. We are blessed to have you help us. Thank you! One more thing: 😉 Thank you in advance 😊 CHRISTMAS SERVICE PROJECT: This year, like last year, we are participating in the Adopt a Family service project. Our school is working with the Saint Vincent De Paul organization. Our class together with our Pre-school prayer partner class will be providing items for a family in the Severna Park area. ITEMS DO NOT NEED TO BE WRAPPED. Please, label gifts with our grade and homeroom teacher's name.
